I'm never really sure what to do with a comment that strongly disputes the premise of a long WIP. Do you intend for me to abandon it? To rewrite the whole thing? Retcon myself? Veronica Mars, the show, required huge amounts of suspension of disbelief, and I don't think I'm asking for much more than that. In fact, my concept of the premise is to *not* handwave the end of season 3, the way that RT surely would have.

The deciding factor for them to flee was Keith probably having to go to prison, where he would be in danger from everyone he'd put away, and then he would not be around to protect Veronica from Gory, that's if she didn't end up in prison as well. Don't forget it was mentioned in open court that she broke into the Mannings' house (and in the VM legal world, that's as good as a conviction—no matter that it wouldn't fly in the real world) and now Duncan and Lamb aren't around to back up her side of the story. And Veronica brings Logan along because she's feeling guilty about the mess she's gotten him into.

Yes, it's not too likely that season one Keith would have run. But season one Keith also wouldn't have wiped a DVR. In season two, he stole evidence from the sheriff's department and lied to the Feds to help Veronica during the kidnapping. In season three, we saw him getting in serious trouble because of his 'pretexting' (pretending to be uniformed personnel) (which surely would have been brought at his spoliation of evidence trial). He struggled (but not that much) about kidnapping Batando.

And yet, he drew the line at fake IDs. However, I do think it's possible to say that with the amount of shit they're in that they'd at least talk about running. They're quite familiar with how justice works in Neptune, and it's never worked for the Mars family. And in a sense, I'd like my readers to feel that they said, "You know what? We've had enough fucking tragedy, and we're leaving before the corruption and crime in Neptune kills one of us."

One of the ways to look at Keith's behavior over the show is that being a private detective actually changed him. He starts out relatively law and order, but as he settles into his new career, he starts to embraces the "grays" rather than the black and white. The sheriff's uniform doesn't really fit all that well anymore. That idea of we follow the law, except when I say so because it's *important*, that's an awful lot like Veronica's skewed world view. A strict moral code that she throws away when she decides something else is more important.

So here, Veronica's life is already ruined, and the choice is whether her dad's going to be around to protect her. And I have to say that them running here is way more likely that what I had Keith do in YLD2 (the situation he put Veronica in). Part of what I'm going for here is that the longer they stay on the run, the more that they end up committing crimes and getting into deeper and deeper shit than how they started (in other words, of course it was a mistake to run—absolutely the wrong choice).

But if I ever had to be on the lam, I'd want Keith Mars with me.

Glad you liked the first person and the tentativeness of the L/V reunion. Thanks for commenting.
