All will be friended if you leave a reasonably comprehensible comment to this post.
Russian troll-bots gtfo.
I have imported my Livejournal here on Dreamwidth. I'm in the process of reposting my fic without the associated comments from this journal. All personal entries that originated on livejournal, which had numerous comments from my friends list, will eventually be either friends-locked or completely private. If you would like to assert ownership of your comments on my journal, and wish me to remove your comments, I would gladly either a) delete your comments b) screen them so only you or I can see them or c) unlock those protected entries temporarily so you can delete them yourselves. My intention is to eventually ONLY have visible comments on fics that were actually left on this site by the commenter.
I mention this because some people find the transfer of your journal contents to Dreamwidth to be analogous to reposting on Facebook/Twitter, and I want to make sure that I respect my commenters' wishes. Dreamwidth allows you to search for and remove your last ten comments on public posts, and I think they are working on enabling you to delete all your comments, if for any reason you are uncomfortable with your thoughts showing up on a different site to the one you originally used. Your requests on this topic will be respected, regardless of whether you and I agree on the current situation, because I do think that the legal issue of who owns comments is evolving.
FAQ
Q: Vanessa, why did you lock comments on your livejournal? You love getting comments on your writing!!
A: It's true, I love hearing that someone enjoyed what I wrote, and I especially love the interaction with my readers, when we parse canon and ficdom for hidden meanings and themes. So yes, I lock comments over there with a heavy heart. However, I've made it as easy (and stylish!) as I could for you to come here to Dreamwidth to leave a comment. All fics on lj now have a link at the end to go directly to the same entry on my Dreamwidth.
Q: Do you work for Dreamwidth?
A: Nope, just like it here.
Q: Why are you such a nut about privacy? We would never do anything to cause trouble for you!
A: First of all, I like having a job. I'm also leery of shifting community standards regarding what is obscenity. I read news stories about teens being required to register as sex offenders for sending partially nude photos to their boyfriends/girlfriends. Despite the recent announcement that livejournal plans to roll back their comment cross-posting scheme, I've decided that my concerns about the focus of livejournal's business remain. (Please note that I have these same concerns about many other sites that I use regularly, and I've similarly taken steps to control my information on those sites as well.)
Q: I don't understand.
A: I've expanded on these concerns on the welcome entry on my livejournal.
Please know that I understand that the chance of an actual breach of privacy is remote, even for people who have taken less precautions that I have. However, I truly believe that each one of us needs to educate ourselves on the issues and make informed choices, wherever we go on the Internet. Think about how many times you've been presented with an agreement on the Internet, that outlined their privacy policy and your user agreement with them. Did you read it? Most of us don't. Do you routinely check the settings on Facebook, livejournal, Dreamwidth and other sites to make sure that your data is protected in the way you think it is? Most of us don't.
Perhaps I'm just an old fogy. I completely support your right to disagree with me.
Q: Oh, Vanessa, you're ridiculous.
A: Could be. Could be. But please respect my wishes. Please do not link my journal to Twitter or Facebook, and do not archive my fic anywhere without my permission. You may recommend my writing to a fan site, with a link and a short description.
Q: Vanessa, you're completely nuts, but I'd like to do something to show you I like your fics.
1) Have some potato chips or a fine vodka beverage on my behalf, since both have currently been prohibited (again) by my fine medical professionals (grumble, grumble). Prosit!
2) Donate a buck or two to Mars Investigations, without which I would never have been able to write my stories. I would also suggest that you donate to Veronica Mars Transcripts, which were also invaluable, but there isn't a link to donate there.
3) Write some fic yourself!
Q: Did you know you misspelled Kristen Bell's name all through The Year of Living Dangerously, Part One?
A: I do know, and one of these days I'll fix it.
Q: Vanessa, you idiot, you cast Mark Valley in two different roles in Part One and Part Two of The Year of Living Dangerously.
A: What can I say? When Mark showed up for his private audition, his performance was stellar
Q: You created a character called Rick Pickett in YLD2, but there was already somebody called Rick Pickett in Episode 21 of Season 2.
A: Sheesh. I'll give you double your money back, okay?
Q: Vanessa, I can't believe how ignorant you are. "Parla usted inglese" doesn't make sense in any language. You're worse than Starbucks!
A: Google it...dude.
Q: How old are you, anyways?
A: Old enough to know better. Young enough to still hope for a happy ending. Old enough to define a happy ending as good health, a few good friends, and work and hobbies that you love. Young enough to still sometimes not have a thick enough skin when people get me down, and to sometimes be a brat about it.
Q: I've compiled a list of all the original names for characters in your fics that weren't VM cast members, googled, and come up with your real name, home address, and date of birth.
A: Yeah, nice try. Now go work on world hunger.
All fics are NC-17, and are not intended
to be read by anyone under 17.
MY INTENTION IS THAT MOST OF MY FICS WILL ALWAYS BE PUBLIC. THE ONLY EXCEPTION IS ONE FIC THAT I MAY CONVERT TO AN ORIGINAL STORY, WHICH IS NOW ON FRIENDS-ONLY STATUS. SORRY, BUT THE PUBLISHING BUSINESS IS QUITE PARTICULAR ABOUT PUBLICLY POSTED STORIES. I AFFIRM THAT I HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONVERT ANY FIC TO A FRIENDS-ONLY STATUS OR TO REMOVE IT ENTIRELY IN THE FUTURE. IF I DO REMOVE A STORY, I ASK FOR YOUR COOPERATION IN NOT REPOSTING IT ELSEWHERE WITHOUT MY EXPRESS CONSENT. I WOULD DO THE SAME FOR YOU.

Re: Hello there
Date: 2009-01-24 07:34 pm (UTC)I, on the other hand, am not that good at keeping things short and to the point. For instance, see my epic!fic.
I think I friended you back a while ago; we had enough friends in common, your journal entries looked okay, etc. so I took a chance. How sick is that these stupid Russian journals have made me wary of people who are just interested in my fic? So it's always good to hear why someone is friending you when clearly some are doing it for nefarious purposes.
There should be an update up tomorrow. Just doing some minor tweaking today on legal stuff (trying to get it right!).

Date: 2009-02-12 02:29 pm (UTC)I just finished YLD and YLDII. Wow. Just wow. I love plotty, angsty fics that put the characters through the wringers and have them come out better and stronger and closer together. These are two of the best fics I've read in all fandoms, and believe me I'm involved in several. Thank you for writing it, thank you for updating regularly, just thank you.
Friending you to keep track of the fic, so don't feel like you have to friend me back. It would be nice if you did, but I'm warning you, my lj isn't really interesting!

YLD I&II
Date: 2009-02-15 11:33 pm (UTC)I like how you developed the characters and the great storyline. You skillfully blend suspense, deep feelings and amazing sex scenes. It makes YLD really addictive.
I hope you will continue writing fictions after YLD II, because I am now one of your fans.

It's the way I tell 'em.... Anyway, enough with the babbling.. I read your fic "Friction Is Our Friend" a while back, and it has to be one of my favourite ever VM fics, and the only one I've bothered to read more than once. I'm delighted to notice that you have a sequel listed above, so can't wait to have a read of that. How did I miss it before??
I'm just psyching myself up to read some more of your scarily gargantuan (but brilliant!) novel "The Year of Living Dangerously". It must be longer than "War & Peace" by now surely?!! LOL
If you befriend me I promise to write you some excellent reviews! (well I will anyway, but hey..)
Re: Back in the U.S.S.R.
Date: 2009-02-20 07:23 am (UTC)It's possible to read my long fic as a massive PWP, you just have to skip until you see the word 'moist', and then read away, blithely ignoring all the plot convolutions.
Comments are really fun for me; you may have noticed that I make of point of answering. They help me not only see what's working in the fic, but also organize my thoughts for what's coming next. And...we usually manage to amuse ourselves while we're blathering away.

Date: 2010-11-14 03:15 am (UTC)I found your YLD fics through the VM fanfic recommendations page on tvtropes.org a few weeks ago. Since then I've blown through every fic of yours I could find, and now I've run out! I can't wait to read the rest; your stories are so beautifully written (especially YLD2--how did you ever keep all those subplots straight??), and your characterization is spot on, even the oft-overlooked secondary characters. You even sold me on Dick/Mac, even though I was fairly disgusted when they hinted at Dick's crush on the show.
You are truly a very talented writer. Your fics have entertained me endlessly so far, and I look forward to reading the rest!
Becca
PS- My LJ page is blank because I use it for reading fics rather than writing them. Your fics are the reason I joined! =)
Re: New to LJ and DW...hope this works lol
Date: 2011-02-04 04:07 pm (UTC)Thank you for your nice comments. I don't know how I kept everything straight in YLD2; it still makes my head hurt. Thank you for reading all my stories. Please feel free to comment on individual stories so I learn what works for different readers.

Friends and more
Date: 2011-07-25 02:16 am (UTC)I would love to read a few of your stories. Thanks for taking the time to make and freely distribute such (I imagine) high quality work. I truly appreciate it. I believe that fanfic authors are the backbone of society. That sounds sarcastic, but I swear it's not. Fanfic authors have been some of my closest companions these last 15 odd years.
If you add me as a friend, this is just a sample of the detailed and glowing comments you can expect to receive.

Date: 2012-05-20 02:57 am (UTC)Thanks for the kind words. The lateness of my replies does not mean that they are not important to me. Which is kind of bullshit to say, but for a while there fanfic was just a little bit too much on top of everything else. I do the best I can, and sometimes it's even good enough.
